A guide to the different types of therapy

The types of therapy

Are you interested in therapy but would like to know more about the different types of therapy, and how they can support you? Stick around as we break down some of the types of therapy available at Scope.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Let's start with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short. If you're someone who loves structure and practical solutions, then CBT might be the therapy approach for you.

CBT is all about understanding the connection between our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. In this approach you’ll identify patterns in your thoughts and behaviours and set clear, achievable goals to manage the unhelpful patterns. CBT is not just about talking - it's about taking action.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

The next type of therapy we’ll have a look at is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT.

Unlike CBT, which focuses on changing your thoughts and behaviours, ACT encourages mindfulness and acceptance. It's all about creating space for uncomfortable feelings while still moving towards what truly matters to you. With ACT, you'll learn to let go of unhelpful thoughts and focus on the ones that will allow you to take meaningful actions that fit with your values.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Now let's talk about Interpersonal Therapy, or IPT. As the name suggests, IPT helps you to interact with others in a healthy way.

IPT also looks for patterns, but in your relationships, rather than your thoughts. This approach helps you to build stronger communication skills and navigate social challenges with confidence.

Schema Therapy

Moving on to the next type of therapy, Schema Therapy, which focuses on the subconscious beliefs you built about yourself and the world around you in early childhood and how these beliefs impact you in your daily life. It can take time to understand your schemas, so this approach requires more sessions than CBT, ACT and IPT.

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)

Solution-Focused Therapy, or SFT is another short-term approach like CBT, ACT and IPT. This approach helps you to move from dwelling on problems and to focusing on solutions.

SFT is all about envisioning a brighter future and taking practical steps to make it a reality.

It’s strengths based, driven by goal achievement, and full of strategies to overcome obstacles along the way.

Play Therapy

The last type of therapy we’ll look at is Play Therapy! It’s a powerful tool and believe it or not, play therapy is a suitable approach for people of all ages. Play therapy uses metaphors and symbols to process painful emotions and understand complex situations.

Play therapy creates a safe, supportive environment, to explore your feelings. It’s much less confronting than the other approaches we’ve talked about in this video and it allows you to work at your own pace. Play therapy is perfect for young people and people who have difficulty with communicating.
