Art-assisted Therapy

What is art-assisted therapy?

Art-assisted therapy is a specialised form of therapy that uses creative activities like painting or drawing to explore feelings, reduce anxiety, increase self-awareness, and strengthen mental health.

It is not an art class; the focus isn’t on artistic talent or producing a 'masterpiece,' but rather on the therapeutic process itself. The resulting art often serves as a visual language and a bridge to communicate experiences that may be too complex, overwhelming or difficult to express through words alone.

How art-assisted therapy can help neurodivergent individuals

For many neurodivergent individuals verbal communication can be challenging, tiring, or feel inadequate to capture the depth of their internal experience. Art-assisted therapy offers a non-verbal and sensory-rich pathway to exploring your feelings.

The benefits

Non-verbal communication

Art bypasses the need for intense verbal processing, which can quickly lead to autistic/ADHD burnout or executive function overload. Art can help do some of the speaking for you.

Sensory regulation

The process of working with different art materials (textures, sights and smells) can be grounding and provide safe and comforting sensory input.

Increased self-awareness

Art can be a safe way to express difficult emotions. Clients can externalise feelings like anxiety or anger, observe them, and gain insight into themselves without feeling overwhelmed.

Executive functioning support

The structured, goal–oriented nature of creating art can help with developing and practising executive functioning skills.
