Why do tics peak at the start of puberty

Why do tics peak at the start of puberty?

The start of puberty is...

particularly challenging for people living with Tourette syndrome, because tics are affected by hormonal change. This means that tics usually reach their peak severity between age 10 and 12.

Around the same age...

humans begin exploring their identity and finding their social fit. In an effort to connect with peers and avoid judgement, bullying and social isolation, people sometimes hide their tics.

But, tics are not controllable, so...

this causes major sensory discomfort, anxiety and sometimes more tics. We can support mental health, identity and social connection for people living with Tourette syndrome, by creating a community where tics are understood, accepted, supported and welcomed.
